As long as an employee meets the eligibility requirements set by the employer and the insurance carrier, they are automatically enrolled and covered. 2. Benefit Amount and Duration

GSI plans typically offer a percentage of the employee’s pre-disability income, often around 60-70%. The benefit duration can vary, ranging from short-term (a few months) to long-term (extending to retirement age, depending on the plan). The specific amount and duration are determined by the employer’s chosen plan and the insurance carrier.

3. Elimination Period

The elimination period, also known as the waiting period, is the time that must pass after the onset of a disability before benefits begin. GSI plans usually have an elimination period ranging from a few weeks for short-term disability to several months for long-term disability. Shorter elimination periods usually come with higher premiums.

4. Definition of Disability

The definition of disability is a crucial element of any disability policy. GSI plans typically use an “own occupation” definition for a specific period, meaning the individual is considered disabled if they cannot perform the essential duties of their regular job. After that period, the definition may shift to an “any occupation” definition, requiring the individual to be unable to perform the duties of any reasonable occupation based on their education, training, and experience.
